Shirley Simcoe was in a class a couple years behind me. Always fun to see PTHS folks on TV.

Scary & exciting both!
My computer (my old computer I should say) has been causing me grief from time to time and I've known that the day was coming when I was going to have to upgrade. Tonight I was on my desktop and every icon I clicked came up as my recycle bin. WHAT?! NO! NO! NO!
Called my tech man (son Joe) and he walked me through getting things back to normal. He's been telling me for some time that I needed a better and newer computer and says my "mother board is dying." Okay. I'm taking out of savings tomorrow and transferring to checking.
We're gonna motor on down to Sequim and visit Costco for a laptop. (and an office program)
I'm getting a headache thinking about it but I have to be strong. I can't allow computers to have power over me like this.

Takin' a Break
1 o'clock in the afternoon and the rains are coming down hard. Sure makes me appreciate the retirement years knowing I can sit here and just watch the weather. I decided I needed to take a little break from the sewing machine. I like sewing yet I also hate it! Most of the time it's relaxing and fun but when things don't line up the way they're supposed to, I often wish I was into woodworking instead. Course then I'd probably cut off a finger or ruin perfectly good pieces of expensive wood.
Most of my quilts are singlebed, crib, or even lap size. Just not enough room for me to work on larger pieces. Or enough patience. I don't actually have the skills (or knowledge) to finish up quilts easily. No matter how slowly I go and accurate I try to be, when it gets down to putting the backing and batting and cover together, my project ends up looking like somebody who has just made her first quilt ever!
Since I'm trying to use up a couple bins full of scrap material (small pieces for the most part), my quilts don't end up being as pleasing to the eye. I suppose if I'm going to make specific patterns, I really should use the same colors throughout. My "almost done blankets" look like something a very unstable person put together. Oh wait, that is the case! ha ha ha ha ha
Today I thought I'd use this iron-on batting I bought to see if it made things easier. It kind of did but when I carried the blanket over to the sewing machine to sew down the center seam, my stitches got smaller and smaller and smaller. This happens to me every time. No matter how long I set the stitch. Happens even with a walking foot. I try to hold the material up off the presser foot but it's hard to sew an accurate seam that way.
I just don't understand why this happens. I can "test sew" a small piece first and I'll get long stitches the way I want but let me put the blanket in there and pretty soon, my stitches are so little and tight, I just pray I don't have to rip anything out. Grrrrr.
I haven't got the seams sewed on this one yet but I may finish today or tomorrow.
I'm thinking I might need to put the cover on the sewing machine later this month and move on over to another hobby--like genealogy or writing. Maybe both. I know I need to have a project going all the time. Gives me a reason to crawl out from under the covers every morning.
And speaking of a project.....I do have something I need to get started on. Transferring my music cassettes to my computer. My new little gadget I got for Christmas is sitting here making me feel guilty. Actually, it's just a reminder of how intimidated I can get with new technology. I read over the directions and while I think I understand most of it, I'm kind of afraid too. I know you learn by experimentation but I've got it in my head that I might blow up my computer if I stick the wrong thing in the wrong outlet. I guess I'll make that my goal for this week--tackle the techy toy!
Sammy follows me from whatever room I'm in to lay down and take another nap. Earlier this morning, his barking drove me from the computer room as he voiced his disgust at black crows daring to walk around on his land.

Who knows this?
I just went online to look up something on the social security death index and it seems to have disappeared. I've been looking at this site for years and now it appears to be something you have to pay to see. Is that right? Does anyone know? If that's the case, I find it very annoying! Who decides, exactly, that they get to take ownership of these information sites and declare it's now a pay-for-view?
There's a whole lot of this maneuvering going on these days. Pure greed in most cases. Perhaps all cases. Like the movies that show up month after month and year after year on TV. Movie stars get money every time their movie appears on television. How much you want to bet, there's wheelin' & dealin' going on behind the scenes. Somebody's making money on this repeat line-up of "selected" movies we get offered with no choice or variety.
I spent my morning on the computer answering emails, writing letters and cards, and working on a short Leader blog. Finally pushed myself away from the monitor and strolled out to the kitchen where I spent the rest of the day working on quilt pieces. I got 15 squares sewn together and then realized one of the squares was sewn incorrectly. I debated on whether or not to rip it out and fix it and finally decided that "yes, I need to make it right."
I was so disgusted with the chore by then I laid everything aside and vowed to resume the project tomorrow morning. Every couple of hours I'd take the dog outside to stretch his legs, pee, and smell what other dogs have been around.
I got a Christmas letter in the mail today and like Kris Logue's, Ann Robson's was a delight. Made me rethink doing my letter next year. After paying bills online, I decided I'd occupy the rest of my day in the recliner. I never did take a nap although I was sure I would need one.
I went to bed at 10 last night and at 11:30 I realized insomnia was the word of the day. Or in this case, the word of the night. I got up for a while, fixed some cocoa, ate a cinnamon roll (yeah, that was dumber than dumb on my part) and I went back to read until 1:15. I continued to toss and turn until maybe 3:30 and then I got up at 6:45 because I wasn't sleepy anymore. I'll never understand how this works. I assume sleep is gonna come on easy tonight. At least I'll have the rain on the roof to listen to.
Brian McConaghy emailed wanting to know if I had any stories to relate about his dad. He was wanting to put something together for people to read later. I think he's into family history a bit. I wrote a few paragraphs about running around with Pat and other Chimacum boys back in the early 60's and included a picture from Pat's senior album that I've always liked. Shows 11 of 12 teens that were graduating in 1960 and had attended Chimacum school all the way through. (Love looking at these old photos)
And now for your listening pleasure, here's the Everly Brothers. Always loved their music. I saw them up close in Reno a few years ago. Mary Gaboury was loving them too. I don't think I ever laughed so hard in all my life as I did that night when Mary was showing the Everly Brothers her appreciation for their tunes. Good laughs. Good times.

Remembering Dad
Some dates you always remember no matter what. January 3rd is one of those days for me. If my dad was living, he'd be eating birthday cake with 89 candles on it. He died two years ago. Or at least it will be two years on April 30th. I miss him.
And since he was a twin, I have to mention his brother, Jim. He died a year and 3 weeks earlier on March 11, 2008. Here's one of my favorite pictures of them as teenagers--standing outside the bedroom which I shared with my sister growing up on Kuhn Street.
Jim and John in the late 1930's.
Looks like your typical January day outside my window. Gray and damp. I ran a few errands early. Had to stand in line at city hall (there's always a line) to submit my income paperwork to get reduced utility rates for seniors. There are advantages to being poor....I mean "having a modest income." ha ha ha
Stopped by the library to catch up on reading The Leader. Always interesting to people watch at the library. Sitting nearby was a guy bundled up from head to toe and wrapped in an old blanket. He was sleeping. Next to him was another guy wearing tie on thongs with no socks. As I was leaving, I noticed another old guy (mighty sorry looking and walking slow) making his way to his sleep chair I suppose. If you're out early on the downtown streets you can always see these homeless fellows. Makes you appreciate the roof over your head and all the toys at your disposal as you keep warm.
Mail lady delivered a Christmas card and letter from Kris & Dave Logue. Every year, Kris outdoes herself writing the best dang letter EVER! What a talent. And I'm mighty glad I'm on the mailing list too.
Well, I really need to get going on my projects now. I bought some pretty material at Joanne's yesterday and plan to make a pillow case. Maybe two. I've been getting up early lately and will never understand why my body clock can't adjust itself to something more reasonable. I suppose I could take a nap and try to jumpstart it back to a more reasonable cycle. Last night I was in bed before 9 pm. I can vaguely recall periods of time where I stayed up until close to midnight OFTEN!
Forgot to mention yesterday that while browsing at the Dollar Tree, Jenni and I noticed these packages for sale near checkout. Well, Jenni noticed and showed me. I was mad at myself for not having my camera on me. There were three kits available to buy---one was to help you predict your fertility cycle, one was a pregnancy test, and the last was to see if you had drugs in your system. (like pot) And all for a dollar a piece. Amazing.
One of the funniest things I heard this week...
Jenni said she got up to pee during the night and found Wayne at the computer watching and listening to music on YouTube. Wayne has always been a huge music lover and it tickles me that he's discovered the computer just recently. It was 3 a.m. hee hee

Out and about with Jen
Jenni invited me to go shopping with her this morning and to visit this campground near Sequim Bay State Park. I always like being driven so I was happy to oblige. For the last few years she's gone to this scrapbooking retreat at Camp David, Jr. west of Port Angeles. Because of budget cuts, though, the camp was closed for the winter. She adored this weekend outing with girl friends so she decided to investigate other places they might hold their retreat. Here's some pictures I took at Ramblewood. She's hoping to get enough ladies to sign up to make the weekend affordable. They do their own cooking and travel to it no matter what the weather--often in snow. I'll never know where she gets this trait of fearlessness to drive in the white stuff---certainly not from her mother!
We stopped at Joanne's as she had a gift card and I needed some more yarn and white material. Also browsed The Dollar Tree for 50 cent greeting cards, envelopes, and batteries.
I had a gift card for Burger King so we drove thru and got hamburgers. Also stopped at Penney's. Lots of good sales at 50% & 70% off. I bought a pair of slippers, some socks, and two pair of warm jammies. Unfortunately, though, the pajamas were packaged in such a way that I couldn't see how big or small they actually were. Neither fit when I got home so I'll have to make a return visit. Probably made in China. They never get the sizes right.
One annoying note about Penney's.....I needed a watch battery and was thrilled to hear the girl at the jewelry counter had one of those gadgets to take the back off my Timex watch. (some watch backs are more difficult to get off than others) Anyhow, as she started to get out her little tool, she informs me they charge $11 TO TAKE OFF THE BACK! WHAT?! FORGET THAT!
With the cost of the removal and battery, my stupid Timex isn't even worth that much. Shame on Penneys for being greedy!
I was thinking about going to a 3-D movie (Hugo) this afternoon but I managed to talk myself out of it. Rain is coming down hard now so I'l content myself with videos at home. I pulled my camera out for our return trip home after shopping. Decided I would take pictures of places I frequent or pass as I scoot around Port Angeles.
Yep. My blog is hurting for photos, no doubt about that but this is what I do. Ha Ha
coming down Morse Creek Road heading into Port Angeles. This view is terrific in Autumn
Wally Mart - the store you love to hate

the Golden Arches of course
Jenni's bank
Frugals drive-thru up ahead
Papa Murphy Pizza. Used to be a bank.
Walgreens just past the Aircrest Motel
Jack in the Box, my favorite milk shake place
Where we sit to look out and eat hamburgers
Approaching Front and Lincoln Streets downtown. Panhandlers often attract attention on this corner.
Red Goose Store
Ahhhh.. home sweet home. Rains have just started too.
Jenni told me that her and Hunter went on a long bike ride yesterday. Seems there's a part of the Discovery Trail closer to my house than the one down on the waterfront. I'm determined to get myself used to pedaling again so I can check it out. She said you go down towards the dump and it heads to the Elwha River. Sounds delightful as long as you don't have to climb steep hills to get there. I'll check it out eventually.
Well, gotta go check the oven. Found a Sara Lee apple pie in the freezer and thought it would make a good New Years Dessert. Didn't bother with my usual resolution to lose weight. What's the use? I will try, though. I'm just not going to beat myself up over it.

Here we go!
Happy New Year! At least let's hope it will be happy most of the time. We all know it's kinda hit and miss day to day.
I've been keeping this special diary of "Jan 1st notes" since 1970. Just a few short sentences on what was going on the first day of the year. Totally boring. But somewhat amusing when you go back and read it years later. I missed a couple years in the mid 70's and the first three years of the 80's. Not sure why. Here are four of the notations ...
1970
Jan. 1: I got up at 9:30, and my hangover wasn’t too bad. Party we threw was sure awful. I don’t think anyone had a good time…including me. I spent the whole day just loafing. Read a little. Rosemary came by with Donny to get her record player. I didn’t do my exercises today. John got on my nerves. Dad called to wish us a happy new year.
1977
Jan 1: Decided it was about time I did something about my weight. Am starting a diet. We didn’t go out last night. Watched ‘It’s a mad world’ on TV. Mary spent the night with Janie. Going to take down the tree. Mr. Gizinski and Sid Klenk came over to get some manure. Judy Angvick called a couple of times
1989
Jan 1: I hemmed a pair of jeans, took in another pair and mended the lining of Jenni’s coat. Went for a 5-mile bike ride to Fort Worden as the weather was nice. It rained later in the day, though. Jenni is tiring of her job at the motel. The rash she has been getting on her fingers we’re pretty sure is caused by the cleaning things she uses at the motel. Mary came home yesterday to go to a big party at the fairgrounds. She must have had fun because she didn’t get in until 5:45 a.m. She was not feeling real well today. Went back to Seattle with the same line—I hate this town and can’t wait to get out of here. My goals for this year include:quitting smoking, losing weight, eat better, exercise more, listen better, read more, write on a regular basis, practice the guitar and harmonica, watch my money better and spend less on gifts. Write more letters and visit more people. Have to get out more. I’m sure glad I have tomorrow off.
1990:
Jan 1: Catie woke me up before 6 a.m. this morning. Gave her a bottle and went back to bed until 9:30. Went to work at the mill for three hours. Sue went to Seattle to visit Mary for the day. Jenni slept all day as she was partying late last night. I sat around watching tv and doing crossstitch. Catie learned to crawl yesterday on her 7-month birthday. Fell asleep a little after midnight reading Donahue. Watched a movie called First Born. Joe called from Germany on Dec 30. He’s near the Czech border now. Snow flurries in Seattle tonight.
I went to bed around 10 last night. Was falling asleep in front of the TV but managed to revive a bit once I settled in bed with a stack of books. My granddaughter has been after me to read 'The Hunger Games' so I started it (along with a couple of others). So much for my resolution to read and finish one book at a time. Oh well, I've accepted the fact that it's my impatient and impulsive nature to jump from one thing to another.
One book by my bed is called 'The World's greatest treasury of health secrets.' I think I picked it up at the library gift shop for a dollar or two. It's really a great read with interesting facts. For example:
12 Quick and easy things you can do to improve your health. They go into a little detail on each one, but it's too much to type here. In short.....
1. Inhale an energizing scent like lemon or peppermint scents.
2. Sip ice water
3. Practice one-breath meditation.
4. Minimize noise at home and at work
5. Bask in bright light.
6. Do abdominal exercise
7. Perform mental "cross-training" (puzzles, etc)
8. Cook with nutriceuticlas--garlic, onion, basil, cumin, turmeric, black pepper, hot red peppers, mustard, cinnamon
9. Check your reading posture
10. Do trigger point therapy. (whenever you feel tense, feel for a tight band of muscle tissue and press it with light to moderate pressure for 10 seconds.)
11. Curb indoor polluton.
12. Do absolutely nothing. Take a 5-minute mental vacation every few hours.
This 600-page book put out by Bottom Line books covers a ton of subjects. Tonight's chapter is 'Advice on how to give advice to others.'
Well, I think I'll get off this computer now and get back to the sewing machine. I had problems concentrating yesterday as I sewed several pieces together incorrectly and had to rip them out and try again. Could be the book I'm listening to distracting me. James Patterson's 'The Big Bad Wolf'. I'm on the last disk now--about the Russian Mafia.
I found two movies that looked like they might be worth taping on television today and tonight. That isn't saying much for cable TV. I wish I could afford HBO and ShowTime because there are some shows on there that I think I'd watch but...I'm not willing to pay that much extra so I'll rent the shows when they come out on disk.
I did get one dinette chair covered this morning and will try to finish up the job this week. Met my neighbor yesterday when I took over cookies. Come to find out, she's one of Jenni's Facebook friends and Jen thinks very highly of her. Says she'd love to have her for a neighbor.
I got my Christmas lights taken down and stored in the garage and even managed to take a large box of Xmas decorations to Goodwill. I'm pretty sure I'll finish up the afghan tonight that I've been crocheting the last few weeks. I already have a knitted one in the wings waiting for me to pick up and work on again.
My New Year resolutions are the same ole things I declare every January 1st. Lose weight, eat better, exercise more, read more, blah ...blah...blah! I spent a little time surfing around on YouTube this morning and came across these two interviews with Jerry Lee Lewis. Was interesting to see how age deals with us all.

Going to take down the tree. Mr. Gizinski and Sid Klenk came over to get some manure. Judy Angvick called a couple of times
