After the 4th

I had mixed feelings about yesterday's holiday.  I was feeling a little tired (cough continues afterall) so I pretty much loafed the day away.  I was still hearing fireworks at 1:15 a.m.  It was off in the distance but it still irritated me how inconsiderate people can be.  I got to thinking about how much holidays have changed.  Interesting things to read if you google the subject.    I saw these two pictures (and several others) on funnypagenet.com/how holidays have changed.

Anyhow, regarding how we used to celebrate holidays when I was a kid.  Seems like fireworks were pretty much just a "kid" thing.  We had sparklers and firecrackers, we went on a picnic and at night, the family watched the "big fireworks display."

Same goes for halloween and valentines day.  Kids dressed up in costume and went trick or treating. Kids brought home valentines from other kids that we mostly made ourselves.  Nowadays, adults go to great lengths on their costumes and parties and we all know how commericalized EVERY holiday has become on TV urging us to buy cards, flowers, candy, gifts, etc.

One of my fondest 4th of July memories is when my cousin, Bill Arey, had a cigar box full of firecrackers and he accidently lit one firecracker too close to the others and the whole bunch of them erupted.  We all ran for cover and I couldn't stop giggling.  His mother came running outside yelling "BILLY!  WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!"  I remember his dad yelled too but he also kind of smiled that smile like 'boys will be boys.'

Gees! A city tractor/cutter is going by to cut some of the tall grass in the lot across the street.  What a racket he is making. I think noise bothers me more than it used to. I like quiet.  Ha!

I began cleaning out the hall closet today. I'm doing it in stages. Meaning I stop to rest now and then. I'm making various boxes this time -- one for the thrift store, keepers that can be stored in the garage, craft supplies that I may try to give people from time to time, and other little odds and ends.  I have a large box of beads (nothing fancy or expensive; mainly plastic ones) but they're pretty and I'm sure someone somewhere would like to have them.  Hollar at me if you're interested.

Some of the stored paperwork stuff needs to go to the dump I think.  Haven't quite figured out for sure how much I need to keep but surely dad and Mar's medicare explanations aren't something I need to hang on to.  It's been over 3 years since they died.  I should probably toss out some of my own medicare explanation paperwork as well.  Funny how that stuff piles up so fast.

One day this week I hope to get going on various places around the front and back yard that need weeding and clipping.  Always kind of fun once you get started but getting out there is another matter.  One day at a time for now.  That closet is enough of a project for today.

I entered the 'Guess the Guest' contest on the Leader website since today's clue is the last one.  I had three people in mind but wasn't particularly SURE the one I submitted is the correct answer.  I never can get the right answer and I enter every year.

I continued work on my life story yesterday but became so frustrated with the Office.Org word program I'm using that I decided to start over and use my old computer which has the Microsoft Word program on it.  Office.org's program (a free download) is pretty much like Word for the most part and I use it all the time but.... inserting pictures was becoming so difficult, I was getting agitated.
I'd like to get the Word Program on my laptop but it's kind of expensive, and since I already have it on my old computer, I can't see spending the money.  I also use my old computer as a hook up to my older scanner (like it better than my new one) and my old printer because it has new ink cartridges in it and I'm not about to waste those since they cost so much.

Luckily, I'd only just begun on my story (had maybe 9 pages written) but I wanted to redo it anyhow. I spend a heck of a lot of time editing.

Well, I've got a bunch of old black and whites to scan that Mary Gaboury wants a copy of so I guess I'll get to that project next and start round two of the closet cleaning.  I've got six salads made up for dinners this week so I won't have to spend too much time in the kitchen. Yesterday I made a batch of yeast cinnamon rolls.  Had this new recipe I wanted to try out and it has definitely become my favorite.

Tomorrow (if I don't forget) maybe I'll type up that recipe....and show some of the old pictures I'm scanning today.  They're kind of interesting.  At least to me.

  1. Your pictures are always interesting...even if I have no idea who they might be pictures of!
